Colin Edwin and Lorenzo Feliciati
RareNoise Records ***1/2
The prevailing atmosphere of the prog jazz underworld conjured on Twinscapes is a hauntingly dystopian blend of bassline bravado and pared back jazz-rock. The experimental duo of two bassists, Porcupine Tree’s Colin Edwin and Naked Truth’s Lorenzo Feliciati, manage to fashion something unique out of a sea of textures and open situations. Joined here on this über-studio album that comes with a crucial Bill Laswell “mix translation” by some interesting guests chief among them futurejazz trumpeter Nils Petter Molvær and percussionist Andi Pupato, the latter best known for his work with Nik Bärtsch’s innovative zen funk outfit Ronin, the best track is easily ‘Transparent’ where NPM with his well honed sense of lontano gives the whole album some of its best moments. Edwin and Feliciati’s shape-shifting narrative vision make this a fulfilling listen from first to last.
