Revolutionary Snake Ensemble
Accurate Records ***1/2
Python-esque? Well not really and not a parrot to be spotted anywhere. But the snakes they do rattle… and they do roll. Led by Boston charmer-in-chief sax/flute player Ken Field on the brass-y band’s run-through of 12 lively numbers here, Field dedicates ‘For Karen’ to his wife who passed away in 2011. With a gumbo of influences from New Orleans marching band traditions stretching to the wildness of free-jazz and beyond Live Snakes also squeezes in versions of ‘Caravan’, and ‘Que Sera Sera’. But best of all is ‘Rock of Ages’, which might as well be ‘Ra of Ages’, drummer Kenny Wollesen quite brilliant here as the horns including trumpeter Jerry Sabatini and his band of brothers squall marvellously.
Released on 11 March
