Impending Joy opens with ‘Metajazz’ marked by Chucho Valdéz-like piano lines and sunny trombone and saxophone unisons. Martin Kershaw cuts loose for a big solo and there’s plenty of energy here, an abiding feature of the 12 tracks, all Maclean’s own pieces apart from the run-around Chopin on, yep, ‘Choppin’’. Kershaw’s a cappella opening on ‘Snakier Warmth’ hits the bull’s eye in terms of emotional immediacy, a meaningful highlight, Maclean adept at providing atmospheric accompaniment on the same tune when he joins, while Greive’s harmonic underlay to Kershaw adds a bittersweet poignancy. More than worth your time. SG
