Autumn look ahead - Jenny Scheinman, All Species Parade, Royal Potato Family ****

LOOKING AHEAD TO AN OCTOBER RELEASE MUST-HEAR

I only know Jenny Scheinman's work in the context of Bill Frisell - best of all heard on The Intercontinentals (Elektra Nonesuch, 2003). She's on lots of the guitarist's more Americana rooted albums. And Frisell role reverses to appear on the violinist's All Species Parade. Two additional icons of jazz guitar join the California born violinist leader playing her originals on this project which is something of a homage to the Pacific North West as Nels Cline of Wilco renown and Julian Lage, whose Speak to Me was formidable back in the spring, are also involved.

Jaunty and vibrant that's a lot to do with the percussive snap, crackle and pop of the drummer here. Kenny Wollesen's touch is always more-ish and contributes a whole deal. He's very Adam Nussbaum-like on opener 'Ornette Goes Home,' a track that is streaming. 'Every Bear That Ever Was' has something of Pink Panther type style to its tip toe-ing. But when Scheinman comes in the scenery changes and there's a great bluesy wail of a note that works very well indeed.

Pianist Carmen Staaf is an Ellingtonian presence and opens up 'Jaroujiji' interestingly also crisply accompanied to the Wollesen rustle on 'The Sea Also Rises'. A studio album recorded in Brooklyn not clunky or stiff in any way it's a pleasure to spend time with these homespun yet deeper than you'd think firmament of sounds.
