Alfa Mist and Amika Quartet's Kings Place performance Recurring to be released as a live album
Pianist Alfa Mist is to release a new live album this autumn. Entitled Recurring (Live at Kings Place) issued by Sekito it's out on 11 October.
Drawing on jazz, hip-hop, and neo-classical influences, Alfa Mist (real name: Alfa Sekitoleko) strings from the Manchester-based Amika Quartet, longstanding collaborators of the nu jazz pianist, are a significant factor in the album's introspective, contemplative style.
It's a beautifully poignant album marked by a transcendent serenity - we had a full listen earlier and will offer some more thoughts on the recording around release time.
'Years Ago'
For now and in addition to the single and for a further idea of Alfa's work with strings listen to 'Years Ago' issued earlier this year on limited edition 7-inch vinyl and digital formats.
Recurring Personnel
The album features Alfa on piano, Kaya Thomas-Dyke on bass guitar and Jamie Houghton on drums. The Amika Quartet are Peggy Nolan (cello), Lucy Nolan (viola), Simmy Singh (violin) and Laura Senior (violin).
Exploring New Themes
On the first single from the album 'Checkpoint (Violence)' Alfa delivers some searing spoken word. Following horrific scenes of racist street protests on English and Northern Irish streets this summer its brooding mood and searing rhymes are more than timely and necessary in the current climate. Its raw thoughtfulness is in sharp contrast to the heated destructive mayhem we all saw online and in the media following fascist far right agitation that was a shameful sight stoked by bad actors and their misguided enablers in certain sections of the right wing press.
