Mahuki, Gratitude, Bridge The Gap ***

Thriving on lots of riffs

Pretty decent this light and breezy listen from Scottish band Mahuki debuting. It's accessible, fun and bright.

Czech-born guitarist and composer Honza Kourimsky is the main instigator and tunesmith - the band apparently circulating for ''ages'' around the Edinburgh live scene.

The blend is something like: add a dash of fairly funky jazz-rock, Eastern European folk and more. But the lusher strings textures don't work so well on the recording beyond adding a little textural colour.

Members include trumpeter James Brady. Acid test - would we go to see them based on this? Tick that box, yes.

''Party vibe?''

Yes these guys can do that.

Doomy? No!

Hooky (it's almost written into the name, hoots mon) yes. Enough muso appeal so as not to be boring or too poppy. Yes.

Do they take the tunes beyond sheer riffery and don't just sink into grooves? Yes so this shows their skill, and the licks are there to take away. You'd like to hear the flow extended a little bit into more elaborate soloing although Brady gives it a good stab on the moodily noir passages of 'Presence.'

Personality? Yes Kourimsky and pals show plenty.
