Step out for Salena

''Don't get around much any more. Might have gone, but what for?''

It is easy to get out of the habit of going to hear live jazz. The last time we heard anything notable for instance was in June - hearing Madeleine Peyroux in a place we'd never been in before called the Karma Sanctum in Soho. That basement spot is just a stone's throw from where you can hear Salena Jones this weekend.

St Giles

By complete contrast if you prefer standing in a field, listening to nu jazz and DJs - among much else try this. You might indeed be wearing a bucket hat as you peruse this pixel fairy dust of a preview, listening to Greg Foat and Gig Masin on repeat in your dressing gown right now, chanting go on you Gooners even if it's still pre-season as you cross off the sleeps on your calendar until the festival. Frothing at the mouth at the prospect of what's going down in Dorset at We Out Here from the 15th isn't ideal perhaps but for the still game ravey Daveys and travelling Dorises among you the mounting excitement is understandable.

WOH as in whoa, hold it right there. Buster. Or wow - right on

The four dayer is an even hipper version of Love Supreme say some so is it any wonder? Dee Dee Bridgewater, Corinne Bailey Rae and Matthew Halsall are among the bottomless brunch of a line-up. Gilles Peterson is among the top posse of wombling DJs set to descend on Wimborne. Details

Soho nights

Ronnie's is closed in August for a refurb. But fear not, the ever giving Soho jazz village offers plenty of delights over the summer. We'd recommend Crazy Coqs over near Eros as a top venue to check out if you haven't been. If you're quick off the mark, this Sunday classic singer Salena Jones (click for tix) is performing with her trio of pianist Pete Billington, bassist Oli Hayhurst and drummer Pete Cater. The gig's at 5pm.

Famous in Luton

If it's place that comes first for you and you fancy a recce beyond London but not far off postpone the urge to ascend the stairs to Bedfordshire but check out - stand by your Beds nevertheless - what's on at the Bear.

The Bear Club sits next to the Power Court site, a new stadium to replace the one at Kenilworth Road, near to the town centre and train station. The area is undergoing major redevelopment, with council plans to close the Bute Street car park to make way for the The Stage project.

That was the word from Luton Today describing the prime location of the happily just rescued venue in a piece earlier in the year. The venue was in danger of closure. It puts on jazz once or twice a week. You'll find all the details you need here
