Beeswax candles burn: In the Saturday morning listen - our favourite time of the week when we try to find something as special to fill it - this week a gem of an EP and the folky, smoky jazz vocals found on the four tracks of the very wonderful Ancient Tree, all of which instantly resonated with us. Not overly mannered, saccharine or impersonating anyone at all, we just wish there were even more tracks from US singer David Barber. Guests include saxist Nicole McCabe, suitably throwing up serpentine lines dancing around the vocal on 'Waltz for Me'; trumpeter Quinn Walker and bassist Patrick Golichnik who is spirited against the ''stomp his feet while he's walking down the hall'' bit in the lyrics on warm character study of ''one of the sweetest kids I know'' - 'Jayla Yoon'. We lingered long over all these tracks especially the slow and woozy ballad 'I'll Stay' and the jaunty ''suspended in the stars'' feel of 'Waltz For Me'. Barber's voice - and what hip, vintage songs he has created - is so different.
