''Jazz meets Amapiano.'' A fresh new sound for the summer.''
The words of trumpeter, composer, bandleader Jay Phelps as a quick gloss about his upcoming blend of jazz and African grooves featuring on a new single out this week. Recorded in London in June, with Jay - playing trumpet and dubbing in a sprinkling of keys on the track - are Nicola Guida on Rhodes electric piano, guitarist Tom Ford, bassist Menelik Claffey and factored in too is a Becky Alice vocal sample.
Canadian Jay burst on the UK jazz scene as an original member of Empirical on their classic Courtney Pine produced self titled album released by Pine's Destin-E label in 2007. The original short lived Empirical line-up and best version of all their recordings since also included future piano star Kit Downes whose new Red Hook album Breaking the Shell with Bill Frisell and Andrew Cyrille is out this autumn.
Jay also appeared as a member of the fictional Louis Lester Band in Stephen Poliakoff's 2013 BBC TV drama Dancing on the Edge set in the London of the 1930s starring Chiwetel Ejiofor as bandleader Louis and featuring Jacqueline Bisset as Lady Cremone who won a Golden Globe for her performance in the serial drama.
What's Amapiano?
Blending deep house, jazz and lounge music, the South African genre Amapiano is exemplified by such a top taste choice as 2020's 'John Vuli Gate,' the work of Mapara A Jazz ft. Ntosh Gazi and Colano.
'Sunset in June' is out on Friday.
