Phalanx Ambassadors released back in the late-spring proved the best thing that Pi put out in 2019. (In terms of avant labels Intakt is clearly the top of the pile for quality and quantity this year, however). Pianist/keyboardist/composer Matt Mitchell I guess is on ECM's must-sign list. Leading a great band of avant explorers in a pulsating set Mitchell’s fourth release as a leader for the Pi label, the pianist has appeared on the label on releases by Steve Coleman, Dan Weiss, Jonathan Finlayson and Anna Webber, and is possibly best known for his work with Tim Berne.

Joseph Branciforte and Theo Bleckmann on LP1 made their debut together released back in the summer. On Greyfade, a new record label Branciforte launching this year and which Branciforte explained featured “high-resolution editions of experimental electronic music, algorithmic composition, ambient, and minimalist chamber music.” Bleckmann provides vocals and electronics while Branciforte plays modular synthesizers, fender rhodes, and introduces tape loops and processing. A fascinating blend, by turn moody and dark, experimental and ambient, a mighty unearthly universe that the two have created.
