''Foremost proponent of modern jazz on the hurdy-gurdy'' admittedly caught my eye in the description here and the tracks streaming so far from said esteemed hurdy-gurdy proponent pianist Joachim Mencel then thankfully caught my ear. This sax-drums duo on A Cry for Self Help between saxophonist Chris Weller and drummer Dave King of The Bad Plus was recorded in a range of venues in the States with material including by Jerome Kern, Weller, Paul Motian, Billy Strayhorn and Albert Ayler and improvisation at its heart. It's a rollercoaster of a ride. Check it out now.
