It's a star band, with, joining Mencel, Steve Cardenas on guitar, Scott Colley, bass, and Rudy Royston, drums, the unusual tonal flavours work well together and the mix is not at all gimmicky. With live jazz atmosphere a quantity thin on the ground this year, and yet the craving for it still continuing in many parts where clubs are still closed or only partially opening, what better an alternative than a new album with plenty of live atmosphere as a key element? This sax-drums duo on A Cry for Self Help between saxophonist Chris Weller and drummer Dave King of The Bad Plus was recorded in a range of venues in the States with material including by Jerome Kern, Weller, Paul Motian, Billy Strayhorn and Albert Ayler and improvisation at its heart.
