Various media in the US have reported the death of Cuban conguero Cándido Camero in New York at the age of 99. Cándido's playing career included appearances with Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie and with Tito Puente and Machito.
A giant of latin-jazz he moved from Cuba to the United States in the latter part of the 1940s. He could play three congas which made his style highly unusual and innovative in his heyday. Cándido became an NEA Jazz Master in 2008, the United States' highest jazz honour.
