Let's be aware rather than wary. There is a lot of seriously good music out there escaping even specialist attention. Exhibit 1: The tunes on The Daily Biological, yes we can talk about tunes, are catchy and their knotty top line riddles have a meaty rhythmic undertow. The heavy lifting certainly on 'Matape' is done by saxophonist Brian Settles while pianist Neil Podgurski has to keep a steady hand on the tiller to allow Settles to veer off. He has his own detailed thing going on that is very zen. Drummer Chad Taylor, from the widely adored Chicago Underground Duo, is very impressive throughout and maintains a loose feel that is welcoming but not at all lazy. I wouldn't say this is a groove record but it has a head bobbing intensity to it but is no way just wild futile anarchy although Settles does his best towards the end of 'Matape' to burn down the house. Out now on Cunieform. Worth wrapping your weary ears around more than a few times this otherwise dismal Locked Down weekend. Stephen Graham
