Brazilian media are reporting the death of Claudio Roditi at the age of 73.

Hailing from Rio the trumpeter and flugelhorn player was a fixture on the US jazz scene since his Berklee student days in the early 1970s.

He was known in addition to his own albums for his accessible, mellow approach and his work with Herbie Mann, Charlie Rouse, Paquito D’Rivera and Dizzy Gillespie’s United Nations Orchestra.

Musicians paying tribute online include drummer Marvin 'Smitty' Smith who wrote on Twitter: ''DAMN!! Another great musician has left us.'' Pianist Ethan Iverson has also commented again on Twitter: ''The art of bebop has taken major casualties with the passing of Jimmy Heath and Claudio Roditi.'' And also responding to the deaths of both Jimmy Heath and Claudio Roditi bassist Christian McBride added: ''Two of the brightest lights in our jazz world have left us. Mr. Jimmy Heath and Mr. Claudio Roditi. I can’t quite find the words to express what they both meant to all of us. Thank you for blessing the world with your music and energy, gentlemen.''

According to reports he was suffering from cancer. More (in Portuguese) at globo.com
