Track of the day and new in the 1 Love spot concentrates on seemingly effortless keyboardism here from the masterful US player Connie Han whose star power increases year on year certainly since Iron Starlet. If you gravitate to Chick Corea and especially Return to Forever's early period you will be in your element. Sunny, cosmic, as much a daytime as a cool breeze-of-the-evening listen 'Prima Materia' has an open feel and the sound develops organically. Drawn from the ancient civilisation of Sumer themed late-September release Secrets of Inanna, flautist Katisse Buckingham, Wayne Shorter quartet bass icon John Patitucci, tenorist Rich Perry and drummer Bill Wysaske join the pianist on the album. What an introduction! More on the release on marlbank in the autumn.

Compositionally very strong with a driving improvisational sense of propulsion to it and an immersive band ethos, pianist, keyboardist, composer DoomCannon, known for his work with singer Celeste, Nubya Garcia, and with Steam Down, provides plenty of evidence now that we have heard the full album to fully justify the buzz around this south Londoner built by the singles earlier in the year. A stirring debut. We will add it to our list of top UK jazz albums of 2022 on the next update. Joining Dominic Canning - DoomCannon - among others on the Brownswood release are rapper Lex Amor, saxist Kaidi Akinnibi, guitarist Daniel Rogerson and drummer Oscar Ogden. Highlights include 'Amalgamation' which is an exhilarating ride that hints at 1970s jazz-rock. If you are into Alfa Mist, Robert Glasper and J Dilla you will be in your element but it is the distinctiveness that really counts. SG. Out today
