Here's 'Agnus Dei' from prolific trumpeter Dave Douglas' upcoming album Secular Psalms due on his label Greenleaf in April. The work was inspired by and dedicated to the 15th century polyptych 'The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb' by Jan and Hubert van Eyck painted for display in St. Bavo’s Cathedral in the Belgian city of Ghent. With Douglas on the album are tuba player Berlinde Deman, pianist Marta Warelis, guitarist Frederik Leroux, cellist Tomeka Reid and drummer Lander Gyselinck.

This is a reissue of a hard to find LP by the sax and piano duo of Stan Sulzmann and Tony Hymas that dates back to the late-1970s and here is issued on a digital format for the first time. Opening with Hymas tune 'Double Threat' there's a panoramic sweep from Sulzmann and a lot of momentum to the piece that has an elegiac grandeur to it. Sulzmann's piece 'Toon' on which he opens on flute has the typical bittersweet pastoral tristesse that the album does do well and that UK jazz fans will be familiar with in the work of Kenny Wheeler, John Taylor and Norma Winstone. 'Snow' has more of an exultant edge to it and as the album progresses a strong sense of interweaving lines and real duo rapport is very strong. The title track which is a Sulzmann/Hymas co-write has a jostling rhythmical undertow to it and as so often on the album there's a lot of heart and passion rising up from the improvising lines and strong thematic material. Hymas (known for his work with John Dankworth, Tony Coe and Jeff Beck) switches to synths on 'Just Above the Treeline' which moves the album into new territory which Sulzmann responds to with a beautiful soprano solo line. What a gem and such an inspirational way to begin a new week.
