UNCUT MAGAZINE 9/10 “A subtle portrait of a complicated man, Murray has made an exemplary documentary worthy of its subject.”

''Ronnie’s made me cheer, laugh and weep. It’s a revelation! Aside from being a superb piece of film-making and story-telling it’s an important film. In my estimation an incredibly important film.'' – Stephen Fry

In 1959, saxophonist Ronnie Scott opened the door to a small basement club in London’s Soho. As part of the burgeoning modern jazz movement, he and fellow saxophonist Pete King had dreamt of opening a club modelled on the swinging scene of New York’s 52nd Street. From its humble beginnings sixty years ago, Ronnie Scott’s would become the cornerstone of the UK jazz scene and one of the most famous jazz clubs in the world.

Ronnie Scott was beloved by many, from the great and famous who frequented his club, to the many hard up musicians who were often helped by his warmth and generous spirit. However, Ronnie was as complex and colourful as the music played on his stage. In private Ronnie battled with depression and when his untimely death occurred in 1996 it left the jazz community bereft of a respected and favourite leader.

Funny and moving, Ronnie’s features performances by some of greatest musicians of the C20th including…

OSCAR PETERSON, DIZZY GILLESPIE, ROLAND KIRK, CLEO LANE & JOHN DANKWORTH, BUDDY RICH, SARAH VAUGHAN, SONNY ROLLINS, MILES DAVIS, JIMI HENDRIX, ELLA FITZGERALD, VAN MORRISON & CHET BAKER, NINA SIMONE and BEN WEBSTER.

Start the week by listening to a lead-off track from Kontinent by Danish singer Janne Mark.

The Danish language title of the track, 'Altid allerede elsket,' according to Google Translate, means ''Always already loved.''

Mark's five-star Pilgrim from 2018, a big numimous hymnal surprise at the time, surprising for that style, chimed easily with a jazz-appreciating sensibility. Kontinent – ''continent'' – features compositions and lyrics by Mark and includes traditional religious music among which is 'Taladh Chriosta,' also known in the Scottish Gaelic tradition, and that dates back to the 7th century.

The full collective album personnel is: Janne Mark, vocals; Arve Henriksen, trumpet, spoken word & electronics; Nils Økland, hardanger fiddle, viola d’amore & violin; Henrik Gunde, piano, harmonium, mellotron and vibraphone; Esben Eyermann, double bass; Bjørn Heebøll, drums. Largely recorded in a Copenhagen studio in May, Kontinent is to be released by the German ACT label in November and was produced by trumpeter Arve Henriksen.
