First Wadada Leo Smith, Vijay Iyer and Jack DeJohnette recording to be issued

The TUM Records label in mid-October are releasing Wadada Leo Smith, Vijay Iyer and Jack DeJohnette's first collaboration together. A Love Sonnet For Billie Holiday includes originals by all three leaders. Iyer on the record plays Fender Rhodes and the Hammond B-3 organ in adddition to his more usual preference for piano. The track 'Deep Time No. 1' includes an excerpt from the Malcolm X speech ''By Any Means Necessary". The title track is a Wadada composition and is the trumpeter-composer's latest Billie Holiday tribute. The label are also releasing 4-CD box set The Chicago Symphonies by Wadada's Great Lakes Quartet ahead of his 80th birthday. Photos: R.I. Sutherland-Cohen

Shaping up to be one of the big releases of October a heavyweight Irish and North American jazz constellation comes together for Plan B. Listen to the tough fat bass guitar lines and more of the pulsating 1970s jazz-rock flavoured 'Suicide Squeeze' drawn from the Ubuntu release. US-based Bill Carrothers on Fender Rhodes is with tenor saxophonist Seamus Blake who plays a blinder on the bustling number as does up-for-it Irish bassist Dave Redmond and cooking with gáis, leading the charge, the fast shuffling Kevin Brady.
