In 6/8 time? That would be neat. Compositions for octet tonight at 6pm (London/Dublin time) are streaming by jazz masters students at the Royal Academy of Music. Octets are fairly unusual. Maybe the 1950s was when they had their shining hour more than any decade. But hey go back to the marvellous sound of Red Norvo and Teddy Wilson in the 1930s and switch on an electric light in your mind why not. Swings like a mother. Check out in more recent years the late Keith Tippett's octet fusing trad Irish rhythms or by complete contrast more in a modal direction, Nostalgia 77.
Log-in to see who's on. ''Previous years,'' says the Academy website ''have seen premiere performances of now established and acclaimed young players such as Ashley Henry, Lauren Kinsella, Misha Mullov-Abbado and many more.''
Wonder what they'll play. And, lastly, a double quartet isn't an octet or is it? Link to the stream
