A selection of tracks is streaming from Zero Grasses: Ritual for the Losses by the vocalist/multi-instrumentalist/composer Jen Shyu and her band Jade Tongue.
To be released on 2 April by the leading US avant label Pi Records, trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire, violist Mat Maneri, double bassist Thomas Morgan and drummer Dan Weiss join the Illinois-born Stanford graduate who is of Taiwanese and East Timorese descent. Zero Grasses is dedicated to Jen Shyu's father who died two years ago.
A 2019 United States Artists Fellow Shyu has recorded and performed with among others Steve Coleman, Anthony Braxton, Wadada Leo Smith, Vijay Iyer and Tyshawn Sorey.
