Inarguably what's here falls into the Darcy James Argue bracket. And while comparisons are invidious if unfamiliar with Lee's excellent 2021 album Daring Mind it's worth placing where Jihye Lee finds her way in big band and going from strength to strength here with these nine originals. The now Nonesuch, former Blue Note, label recording star Ambrose Akinmusire guests on a couple of tracks while the ensemble is conducted by Lee who hails from Korea but lives in the States. Notables in the band are saxist Jason Rigby and trumpeter Stuart Mack whose new album Vibrations we reviewed recently. Adventurous, imaginative and prone to take a few risks along the way it's a long way from the Tuxedo Junction days of Erskine Hawkins and Glenn Miller and lands the right side of relentlessness. If that's what big band means to you - this sparkling 21st century incarnation of the genre ain't meant for you.
