Joy Harjo, poet laureate of the USA and first Native American to hold the position, plays saxophone and flute, sings and recites on I Pray For My Enemies. With a stellar band who include Peter Buck of R.E.M. and Mike McCready of Pearl Jam the most jazz-relevant track certainly in terms of the lyrics on a stirring collection is perhaps 'Midnight is a Horn Player'. Harjo says: ''My grandmother Naomi Harjo played sax in Indian Territory, before Oklahoma statehood.'' The title track is also a must, a veritable chant based on one of Harjo's most cherished poems. Released by Sunyata Records on 5 March
