A cross between GoGo Penguin and Portico Quartet cult three-piece Mammal Hands have somehow carved out their own space in their eight years together and this latest album from saxophonist Jordan Smart, pianist Nick Smart and drummer/tabla player Jesse Barrett, is mature and involving. You can't really bracket what they do easily under any genre although for sure there are large helpings of electronica, minimalism and spiritual jazz in the hybrid mix. This latter element is the most attractive aspect of the band which sticks to what it knows best and continues that same song. Playing band written tunes that are often based around a simple motif and then developed into an emotional arc it's a solid showing, nothing more nothing less.
