The first thing that leapt to mind here listening to this beautifully gathered duo record was something of the rapport between the late Lyle Mays and Pat Metheny. That scrap of a connection does not always remain but pianist Maria Chiara Argirò and guitarist Jamie Leeming certainly navigate a kind of dreamy pastoral commonality that is both highly melodic and leaves plenty of room for interesting improvisational passages, the two make their work together seem patient and thorough. Tracks include a cover of James Blake's 'Retrograde' where the pair delve more into electronic territory. Dreamy and private ('Fables' captures this aspect of the record especially well) the pair have created something of a precious miniature here. Out on Cavalo records on 16 October.

It's not out until next year but I'm sure the collectors and wider Tubby Hayes community can wait as patiently as possible for the Little Giant's legendary drummer (and jobbing priest) Spike Wells in the newly formed QOW Trio where Wells combines with bassist Eddie Myer and saxophonist Riley Stone Lonergan. The album was recorded in an afternoon, ''not a booth, partition or headphone in sight – the real Rudy Van Gelder deal!'' quips Wells. To be released on the Ubuntu label, continuing their sustained signing spree of late. Photo: Lisa Wormsley
