What's hot today among upcoming new releases happens to be the very cool sound of Mark Turner whose Return From The Stars which is out next month is introduced by 'Nigeria II' (the first 'Nigeria' was on 2019's Where Are You). With trumpeter Jason Palmer prominent in the sound along with Turner, bassist Joe Martin and drummer Jonathan Pinson you get a very modern statement that has a jagged bustling feel but that nonetheless journeys back to capture the excitement of early bebop. Palmer has a Dizzy-like swagger here that is infectious and which relative newcomer Pinson responds to so very effectively. Turner's solo when it comes has huge confidence and a breadth to it that opens up the whole band sound. Essential listening!

For sheer craft and deft execution look no further than this treatment of Herbie Hancock's 'Textures' from 1980's Mr Hands on guitarist Romain Pilon's elegant new standards-packed Falling Grace album which is out in early-March. Pilon has a fine trio here with Yoni Zelnik on double bass and Jeff Ballard on drums. Ballard provides a rugged direction to the otherwise gentle trajectory of the piece that Pilon does so much to illuminate by his skilful soloing.
