New discovery listen: Try saxophonist Vincent Lê Quang's Everlasting. Lê Quang who is a teacher at the Paris Conservatoire is also known for his work with Swiss jazz icon drummer Daniel Humair on such records as Modern Art. Everlasting issued by La Buissonne finds Lê Quang with pianist Bruno Ruder, double bassist Guido Zorn and drummer Joe Quitzke.

La Buissonne, the house label of one of Europe's most revered recording studios used for jazz, is rapidly establishing itself especially for chamber jazz styles even if the frequency of its release programme is limited so far. Read a review of Jean-Marie Machado Quartet's superb Majakka from earlier in 2021. Everlasting is out now

The top track from a recent very high rating album Time Traveler, about more here, lights up 2021. It has been such a long time since Nnenna Freelon was in the studio. Her own heartfelt song 'Just You' is best of all on an album that works on each and every track. Whether it's a fluent 'Betcha by Golly Wow' the Thom Bell/Linda Creed song that has a lightness to it that engages or the curveball Jim Croce's 'Time in a Bottle' that acts as a reset or another Bell-Creed song 'You Make Me Feel Brand New' synonymous with The Stylistics so intimately accompanied by guitarist Keith Ganz, the choice is wide and the impact delves deeply.
