Published this month is Philip Nanton's Riff: the Shake Keane Story, a groundbreaking biography of the dazzling Joe Harriott trumpeter and poet Ellsworth McGranahan "Shake" Keane.

The erudite St Vincent-born player widely referred to as ''Shake'' after the Bard himself was significant at the advanced and historically significant end of the 1960s UK jazz scene because he was in the frontline of Joe Harriott's ''free form'' innovations died in Oslo in 1997.

Shake was a leader in his own right playing often in viscerally satisfying buccaneering hard bop and alternately reggae-influenced settings. He appeared, sealing his significance especially, on classic Harriott albums Free Form and Abstract.

Shake's own records as leader on high profile labels included In My Condition and The Big Fat Horn Of Shake Keane.
