Out of the blue 'Creation: The Joy Of Being' the opener of Reciprocity drops. The habitually tasteful Biophilia label this coming May are releasing the full album from María Grand, each instrumentalist on the release contributing voice. The tenor saxophonist is with relative unknowns double bassist Kanoa Mendenhall and drummer Savannah Harris. The music was written and recorded by Grand early last year when the artist was pregnant with her son, Ayní. There are 13 tracks in all, seven of which form a 'Creation' theme, two are 'Fundamentals'. The start is a vocalised statement of intent like a mantra. When the trio kick in instrumentally there is so much space in the music it is startling. Checking old stories back in 2018, Grand's Magdalena hit the spot. The next year heard in a different context the Swiss improviser cropped up significantly inside Code Girl. Grand is an improviser superstar in the making it seems once more, a weaver of dreams. Listen, even as these morsels for now only go, that's the listening proof how-and-the-why, to show. SG

The great Carroll Thompson is to appear at Jazz on a Summer’s Evening in London's Cadogan Hall on 5 June in front of a socially distanced audience. Steve McQueen in his beautiful Small Axe Lovers Rock film made serene use of Janet Kay's 'Silly Games' part of the current lovers rock dreamworld reborn again by McQueen that has created a zeitgeist. Also for Cadogan, near the Royal Court theatre just off Sloane Square, Tara Minton, Jo Harrop and Paul Lee, best known for singing the classic Ben E. King, Leiber & Stoller song 'Stand By Me' with the Kingdom choir at Meghan and Harry's wedding, are in the line-up in this promotion by Mayank Patel's Hampstead Jazz Club and radio station Jazz FM. The band on the night is full of top drawer jazzers MD'd by pianist Alex ''The Last Bohemians'' Webb. Tickets
