On PM in the AM: Today in the podcast we think about Once Around the Room a November release from the powerhouse US tenorist Joe Lovano and the New Cool School Danish guitar master Jakob Bro. Both former bandmates of Paul Motian (1931-2011) they unite for their ECM produced and issued tribute to the enduringly influential bandleader, drummer and composer.

Lovano is on tenor and tarogato. Other album personnel are double bassists Larry Grenadier and Thomas Morgan, bass guitarist Anders Christensen, drummers Joey Baron and Jorge Rossy.

Motian theme tune 'Drum Music' heard for example on the sublime Lost in a Dream is in the Motian mix in the offing this autumn from the Lo Bro 7

Material includes Motian composition 'Drum Music' heard on such recordings as Lost in a Dream (ECM, 2010) and Once Around the Room was recorded in Copenhagen at the Village recording studio in November last year.

Adventurous singer Becca Wilkins later on effectively scatting on the innocent sorcery of 'Morpeth' the lead-off track from the EP for download and streaming Somewhere, Not So Far Away out on 28 October that marks the first outing of the Olivia Murphy Jazz Orchestra on a recording. A coming together live of Birmingham scene new generation talents Olivia Murphy is the composer, bandleader and conductor at work and certainly keeps demanding close listening attention the more material is made available. Among the ensemble is pianist Olly Chalk, Wikins' Gestalt bandmate. The ensemble arranging hinges on the eventual emergence of scalding electric guitar. Don't worry too much about the relatively lo-fi impact of the audio as the quality of the musicianship smashes through. And certainly the brass riffery that emerges especially on from the 6-minute mark adds additional pace and keeps you guessing. All in all the song ups the ante even further after the appealing 'Moonrise' earlier in the year.
