'On Thursday' is the bittersweet ballad and beautiful lead-off track from the album of the same name to be issued next month on Swiss label Hout.

Recorded down in the Village, Copenhagen, it is the sound of the Phelan Burgoyne trio.

English drummer Burgoyne is known for his work with the distinguished Konitzian Martin Speake and already slowly but surely is gathering the reputation of being something of an auteur himself as anyone familiar with his work will know.

That cinematic directorial quality (taking a small liberty with the term) certainly is in evidence on this painterly new piece that finds the drummer on brushes. PB is in fine company here with Italian pianist Emanuele Maniscalco and Danish bassist Anders Christensen, the Dark Eyes Stańko band player whose composition 'Berlin' was covered so winningly by Rob Luft this year. Compositions are by the drummer.

Album release date itself is 18 December. Photo: Mike Højegaard/Hout
