Great flute particularly here from Gareth Lockrane as Tim Giles chops out an African percussive cross-rhythm pattern - Lockrane also formidable this year on the James Taylor Quartet's storming Man in the Hot Seat - on a sparkling version of Chris McGregor's 'Dakar' the mellifluous energy-laden opening track from The Loneliest Flower in the Village (the name riffing, going superlative in the wordplay, on a Johnny Dyani composition).

The Jazzman release is new in January from producer Ben Lamdin's long running cult deep scene outfit Nostalgia 77 with a strong South African theme figuring stylistically - the aforementioned erstwhile Hungry Ant Giles is on drums, James Allsopp tenor saxophone, Ross Stanley piano, Alex Bonney trumpet, Riaan Vosloo - bass.

The Loneliest Flower in the Village includes Vosloo and Allsopp originals plus a take on Abdullah Ibrahim classic, 'Ishmael.'
