Heads up… not sure when the LP will be released but in the meantime Melody Gardot fans step this way. Familiarise yourself with the sounds of the very evocative Argentinian duo of singer-bassist Cande Buasso and pianist Paulo Carrizo as a statement of intent to say the least on their smoky super-sensual treatment of the Ray Henderson and Lew Brown song 'The Thrill is Gone' first performed in the 1930s by Rudy Vallee & Everett Marshall and later winningly rendered by such singers as Helen Merrill smoulderingly on You've Got a Date with the Blues in the 1950s and Dakota Staton so very philosophically with Shearing. I guess 'Cande y Paulo' will be hugely successful before too long. Their sound certainly speaks out on an emotionally blue level. SG

New Orleans R-and-B singer, songwriter, saxophonist Robert Parker has died, reportedly of natural causes, at the age of 89. He was the writer of the 1960s hit 'Barefootin’. As a teen he played sax with Professor Longhair and later started his own band, Robert Parker and the Royals. He played sessions for the likes of Ernie K-Doe, Fats Domino, Frankie Ford and Irma Thomas and in the Tijuana Club house band backed many visiting icons such as Brother Ray whose sound he resembled on his infectiously riffing biggest hit. Parker was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame in 2007.
