Tingvall trio bassist Omar Rodriguez Calvo with his fellow Cuban, the distinguished pianist Ramón Valle and drummer Jamie Peet from the Netherlands, are on a rewardingly intense and very convincing version of the great Leonard Cohen song 'Hallelujah.'

Drawn from Inner State, to be issued by the In + Out label, arriving two years on from the Valle trio's The Time is Now featuring the much missed Roy Hargrove, the live album is to be released on 20 November. Recorded at venues that included the leading Vienna jazz club Porgy & Bess, tracks include a heartfelt tribute to Valle's late mother.

Regarding the Leonard Cohen cover, Valle has commented: '''With this song by Leonard Cohen, I began to hear stories behind the lyrics, and I developed a contrasting bass line as a second story. In this way, I managed to master the challenge of interpreting this melody without singing.''

Warmly sound engineered two years ago by Luc Saint-Martin, in-house sound engineer at the Pizza Express Jazz Club (why ''warmly''? Just check how the scattered audience applause is rendered as one checkpoint and then you can focus on the instrumental mix), 'Search Me' is drawn from Live at London Jazz Festival: Road Tales to be released by the Whirlwind label on 20 November. A little more description on the players heard on the track, John O'Gallagher is a Webern expert, his sound always has a bluesy ache to it and a thrusting energy. Leader Jeff Williams, a legend, Konitzian, and is always worth listening to live and on record. Josh Arcoleo was on Andrew McCormack's Graviton last year and was mentored in his early playing career by Pee Wee Ellis. Lasserson is well known for his work with Ethan Iverson and was on Loredana that came out last year. Upstairs exterior of Pizza Express Jazz Club. Photo: marlbank
