Tonally pristine dialled down freebop here from Portuguese altoist Ricardo Toscano in a piano-less trio setting recorded in a Lisbon theatre last year that begins with the title track modernistic but not avant in outlook. Drummer João Pereira shadows the leader relentlessly. More an EP than an album 'Orange Blossom' slows things right down and finds Romeu Tristão softly as if purring on double bass. Monk's 'Played Twice' and a fado traditional melody add to the originals. But while the best is yet to come given the obvious potential of all concerned Chasing Contradictions will more than do as a decent introduction to all of the above still needed even after an earlier quartet statement in 2018.
