Holding you close… slow dancing… feet barely touch… Sometimes you just want the solemnity and the daring and you get both in the Sachal Vasandani lyrics allied with the freshly assembled mood, metre, and interpretation of Wayne Shorter's 'Dance Cadaverous' from Speak No Evil in the form of an intimate voice-led duo with pianist Romain Collin. It is a significant highlight of Midnight Shelter which is released today by the Edition label. Vasandani injects an Kurt Elling sense of delving into the psychic darkness that just means gravity and meaning in layer upon layer. The treatment completely alters the mood of the instrumental piece arranged on the 1966 album for trumpet, tenor saxophone, piano, double bass and drums, the tempo now made almost a freeze frame and yet apt in its own realm as the lights flicker out.
