Esja last year for months and months was the record I played most. It still gives me a lot of pleasure.

There was something compelling about its bittersweet ostinati and the grand musical world Hania Rani conjures out of so little.

The record had an introverted feel to it and manages to tap melody out of rhythm and mood, often the three forces combining to mesmerising effect, say on ‘Eden’, and rather than sliding into a dreamy haze has an edge to it that draws you back again and over again.

'Leaving' from the Pole's new album Home has just dropped. So this is a happy day to discover it.

Key points from what to expect according to the issuing label Gondwana:

  • Rani adds vocals and electronics.

  • Bassist Ziemowit Klimek and drummer Wojtek Warmijak two thirds of the Gdańsk band Immortal Onion whose impressive futuristic GoGo Penguin-esque album XD [Experience Design] has just been released are her bandmates.

  • The album includes unspecified fragments of the short story Loneliness by Bruno Schulz a writer who also resonated with the late great Tomasz Stańko. Stańko told me last time we were in touch a few years before his death that Schulz's ''language and usage of Polish were amazing and exceptional. His literature is teleporting us to this lost world of small towns of the east, full of magic, beauty and poetry.''

  • Rani on the new record which is to be released in May 'steps into more of a producer's role, adding strings, bass and drums where needed, exploring the sounds of synths and electronica, but also creating textured layered songs made from acoustic samples, mostly from piano recordings.'
