The late Chadwick Boseman as Levee in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom won for best actor in the Golden Globes, the high profile US film awards usually seen as the best indicator of future success at the Oscars later in the awards season.

Soul, with music by Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross and Jon Batiste won for best score and the film also triumphed in the best animated film category. Best actress Golden Globe went to Andra Day for The United States vs. Billie Holiday. There was disappointment however for Celeste and the other relatable jazz nominees in the best song category with the non-jazz 'Io Si (Seen)' picking up the Golden Globe.
