High up at number 3 in the latest UK jazz and blues chart - a surprise in such a distinction given that Earth Patterns isn't remotely a jazz or for that matter a blues album either - the trio Szun Waves fashion a well-crafted vision of their own soundscapery here, more an electronica vision than anything. The project of electronic producer Luke Abbott, saxophonist Jack Wyllie, known for his work with Portico Quartet, and of drummer Laurence Pike the tempos are glacial and the sense of firm production palpable. It's ultimately a frustrating listen however because the 7 tracks are all too samey. The album is crying out for a remix given some strong ideas that work as raw material but leave us wanting a new angle and certainly an injection of pace.
