From Wild is the Wind by Ian Wilson, 'Nox' was composed for Irish contemporary folk ensemble Yurodny and features improvised solos from Mihály Borbély on tárogató and Tom Arthurs, trumpet. Tigran in solo performance streams this coming Saturday night: 7pm, London time. Back in the summer we very much dug The Call Within, from pianist/composer Tigran Hamasyan. On it the great Armenian was joined by Evan Marien on electric bass and Arthur Hnatek on drums + guests, the album inspired by Tigran's interest in maps from different eras, poetry, Armenian folk stories, astrology, geometry, ancient Armenian design, rock carvings, and cinematography. A spectacular affair, darkly prog in places, feverishly intense for sure with an elegiac tenderness to it as well and probably Tigran's best yet, full of bravura playing, tremendous improvisational flair and that unique Tigran sound you just don't hear anywhere else, it is a must for anyone interested in the sheer possibilities of music making.
