Saxophonist Oded Tzur, with pianist Nitai Hershkovits, known for his work for instance on Duende with the bassist Avishai Cohen, Petros Klampanis on double bass and Johnathan Blake, drums, on lovely Dave Holland album Without Deception recently, turn down the light almost to darkness. But it is unconvincing in terms of mood and involvement. Klampanis' exquisite solo bass feature at the beginning of 'Miniature 2' goes a little way to save the day. Oded makes use of the Charukesi Indian scale on several pieces but I am not sure if that element actually fuses as effectively as it might and it certainly is not obvious. Encore tune 'Can't Help Falling in Love' hardly applies an espresso jolt although it is pleasantly rendered and provides ''an Elvis'' flicker of recognition but remains a fairly incongruous choice given the quasi-meditational feel earlier that then dissipates. A bit dull overall. SG. Out on ECM.
