Solo piano and synth that occupy a private space flirting with Norwegian folk music, avant-garde preoccupations and above all not at all afraid of manipulating time and silence there's a lot to like here from the ever inventive Christian Wallumrød. It doesn't swing by the way if you are that kind of jazz fan and Speaksome's often clinical preoccupations might place it more in a contemporary classical sort of space. Getting obsessed with what genre or not this might or might not be is an awful waste of time as ever! A kind of post-modern improviser's nocturne might sum it up more neatly and I preferred the pieces when the folk element within all the microscopic detail of the construction of the compositions was stripped away. That said it's a captivating listen and far less austere than 2015's Pianokammer. But I still yearn for Wallumrød's noisier, messier Close Erase days however much this is a pleasant listen which it is and demonstrates just so we know and perish the thought that we might dare forget what tricks the Norwegian still has up his sleeve.
