Capital cover here of Donovan's 'Sunshine Superman' by none other than Iggy Pop, the latest promo from the Turbanator Dr Lonnie Smith's upcoming Blue Note album Breathe. Dr Lonnie and Iggy plus the Hammond B3 great's band of guitarist Jonathan Kreisberg and drummer Johnathan Blake and percussionist Richard Bravo recorded together in a Miami studio for the Don Was-produced project. There's a fabulous percussion contribution from Bravo within the sound. Iggy, whose vocal invites you in bit by bit as the song unfolds, is also on 'Why Can’t We Live Together'. Van on that track is with Crawford Bell (the Northern Ireland gospel and country legend who was on Van's country album Pay the Devil), Kelly Smiley and Dana Masters on backing vocals doing the sha-la-la-las, Pete Hurley on bass guitar (returning from Three Chords and the Truth), Richard Dunn on organ (he was on the superb Down the Road), Stuart McIlroy (heard on Roll with the Punches and Three Chords and the Truth) on piano and Colin Griffin (You Win Again, Down the Road, Three Chords… etc) on drums. The song is a Van original.
