Look out for some archival 1976 and 1977 Buddy Rich this autumn and a tribute to the tragic figure of Barry Kiener, a pianist who died of an overdose while travelling on Buddy Rich's tour bus. Issued by Lightyear Entertainment executive produced by Cathy Rich, Buddy's daughter, the recording focuses on trio interludes within his big band concerts taped by Rich’s alto saxophone player Alan Gauvin - Rich figures with Kiener and alternating bassists Jon Burr & Tom Warrington. Rich solos only on brushes. The recordings were made in Montreal, California, Sweden, Norway, Boston and on the SS Rotterdam Jazz Cruise. Get into the zone by listening to the Class of 78 album with Buddy, Warrington and Kiener on Chick Corea's 'La Fiesta' where you get a sense of the power and panoramic spread of Kiener's playing. The 1 September release of Trios is stocked full of standards including 'Like Someone in Love,' 'Secret Love,' 'Stella By Starlight' and 'Here's That Rainy Day.'
