Track of the day is this very busy version of Mal Waldron's 'Fire Waltz' from relative unknown drummer Aaron Seeber here with a bunch of much better known players in vibist Warren Wolf, altoist Tim Green, bassist Ugonna Okegwo and pianist Sullivan Fortner. Wolf and Fortner's interplay wrapped around by vivid splashes of drum passion from Seeber keeps you listening as the tune sprawls into a disciplined sense of improvisation. The track is included on the retro-studded album First Move which is to be released next month.

You gain a real sense of conversation here on this elegant pared back trumpet-piano duo album from Italian masters trumpeter Flavio Boltro and pianist Fabio Giachino recorded in Turin in 2020. Boltro can be Enrico Rava-like in the bravura way he weaves in and out of the melodic lines while Giachino finds an enormous spatial dimention on a track like 'Prelude to Salina' reminiscent of the late John Taylor. There's a lot of weight and satisfying depth to this pairing as the two balance the challenges of melodicism and more abstract approaches in a knowing blend. Highly recommended.
