More a Wigmore Hall kind of record than fodder for a steaming mosh pit in a sweaty club, and certainly more at home in a BBC Radio 3 classical-crossover slot like Georgia Mann's morning show than in a swingalong favourite playlist rung in on Jazz Record Requests, there's some beautiful new thinking delivered so majestically over sweeping classical themes here from the Polish duo of violinist Adam Bałdych and pianist Leszek Możdżer. With themes by Erik Satie, Josquin des Prez and others the album makes use of Renaissance violin, and two grand pianos tuned to different frequencies. Tonally it's very special. And you end up sucked into a world that is neither ancient nor exactly modern but more a space only these two special musicians know. The pair may well be needing a new mantlepiece when awards season comes around. Passacaglia certainly deserves every award going. Out today. Photo: Wiktor Franko
