Pianist-composer Herbie Nichols, who had a brief recording career as a leader in the 1950s and an equally brief life dying at the age of just 44 in 1963, may be best known for co-writing 'Lady Sings the Blues' with Billie Holiday. But he has also had a big influence on some of today's most significant pianists including Vijay Iyer and Jason Moran - Iyer covered Nichols' 'Wildflower' on his album Accelerando for instance. And bassist Ben Allison has done as much as anyone going back decades with his long running Herbie Nichols Project to kindle the flames of this fine Blue Note artist. And here Allison presents a lovely spread of tunes of Nichols' in a really lively drummerless trio setting with guitarist Steve Cardenas and tenor saxophonist Ted Nash. Six of the tunes according to Allison's website ''had been sitting in storage since the 1950s, until a few years ago when they were discovered by a relative.'' Some find - as is this excellent album.
