The key thing about The Savoy 10-Inch LP Collection with this release during this the centenary of the great saxophonist Charlie Parker's birth (building to 29 August the day of his birth one hundred years ago) given the familiarity of the 1944-48 material and the many reissues over the years is above all the quality of the sound and the covetability or not of the graphic design. Weigh all that up carefully. Looking at the images so far, hmmm definitely a good seriously vintage look. The good news is that this 28 February reissue comes with newly restored and remastered audio so it is not the sort of reissue that is a copy of a dog eared copy and there are enough of those out there and not worth anyone's dosh usually. Jump in especially if you need to start replacing your Bird collection.
The upcoming set includes photos, and what the label are saying is ''rare ephemera''. No idea what that is so far (lint from the hem of his garment?) but sounds like marketing talk to me and hopefully not too ghoulish. Let's see. Neil Tesser has written the liner notes, an experienced hand. Suffice is to say all this looks very juicy indeed. Celebrating Bird hopefully will be very stimulating in not just the obvious ways this year meaning as a spur to new invention. Get 'Ko-Ko' when you take the plunge pre-ordering. On Craft via Concord. All the spiel is here. Tracks are, in bebop terms, as Shakespeare is to literature. Trigger warning, may, if unfamiliar so far, change your music listening entirely – and forever start you on a path to destinations unknown.
