A slim EP featuring the piano playing side of Dena DeRose with some originals of the American's and versions of 'Laura' and 'You and the Night and the Music' in the mix. Elegant, maybe a throwback to the kind of jazz piano you imagine was more the norm in the 1940s and 50s, DeRose is accompanied by bassist Danny Ziemann and drummer Chris Smith. If you are a fan of say the approach of Alan Broadbent you will feel right at home with the style and direction here. DeRose is very expressive, mindful of the blues, and injects a twinkling warmth say to the opening of the very sprightly 'You and the Night and the Music'. The originals have a positivity to them that is a hallmark of the release that also works nicely as a feelgood record for the holidays without overtly being one. DeRose is playing the Pizza Express' two Steinway festival with Janette Mason in March - click for more details
