On the east London jazz scene in Dalston activity during Tier 2 is currently very limited. On Bradbury Street, pictured, close to the heart of the scene, Servant Jazz Quarters is still to resume its live programme. Cafe Oto nearby on Ashwin Street is also still to begin again.

The remarkable Vortex on the corner of Bailey Place and Gillett Square, however, against all odds, is open on Friday and Saturday nights and keeps the scene alive. The Ant Law trio play there tonight. The show live streams from 8.30pm London time and is only available for the duration of the gig. Photo: marlbank

Part of the Black and Proud Season Channel 4 in partnership with jazz club Ronnie Scott’s celebrate British jazz musicians in Sing it Loud: Black and Proud to be shown on Channel 4 on Wednesday 28 October at 11.10pm.

Sunil Patel of Whisper who made the programme told The Guardian: “We’re very aware of the narrative of trauma that often surrounds Black History Month programming and we wanted to use our platform to promote diversity as well as celebrate black culture, especially in Britain. Most of these musicians haven’t had the chance to play at all in 2020 so, hopefully, this will be a fantastic showcase of their work, as well as bringing a wider audience to jazz.''

Maya Jama presents with Zara McFarlane, Ashley Henry, Poppy Ajudha, Reuben James and Ayanna Witter-Johnson taking to the stage to perform their own interpretations of black protest anthems from Nina Simone, Stevie Wonder, Billie Holiday, Marvin Gaye and James Brown.
