Pianist Junior Mance has died. He was 92. His wife Gloria Clayborne Mance announced the sad news.

Remembered for his work with Gene Ammons, Charlie Parker (at the Beehive) and Dinah Washington, in later life Mance was a teacher at the New School in New York and taught Brad Mehldau among other future stars.

The documentary Sunset and the Mockingbird told the pianist's story relating how Mance suffered in the latter years of his life from dementia but who experienced the deep love of his manager and soulmate, Gloria.

Mance is a continuing influence especially via his own trio records, his sophisticated touch and extraordinary flair, on a host of today's jazz notables, including singer José James who he appeared with on The Dreamer, and Ethan Iverson. RIP

Looking at what's ahead on dancer Piero Pata's label Le Coq, Trio caught my eye being a committed but hopefully not completely deranged, touch wood, Vinnie Colaiuta fan.

First things first. Vinnie is among the cockadoodledo constellation of drum talent on the outstanding All-Stars release The Jazz All Stars, Vol 1. When Marvin 'Smitty' Smith and Weather Report Black Market and Heavy Weather legend Alex Acuña knit in behind rousing horns and soulful John Beasley lines a case of nail-yourself-to-the-floor for health and safety considerations are applicable on 'Log Jammin''. Because the turbulence of sliced up supergroove runs amok. Pianist Bill Cunliffe, in that trio mentioned above that's coming up with Vinnie and John Patitucci, has completely captured this one throughout in terms of flow in the musical direction. Rolls-Royce audio quality it's clear even listening to it just now as a highly compressed stream, will poke your ears out to further up the impact in tandem with the sleekness of the carefully honed arrangements. New tunes jostle with the classics, sections intertwine so you can't see anything beneath the feathers, this starship shimmers, pulsates and flies like a big baaad bird. SG. Bill Cunliffe, pictured.
